Marshal White was shot and killed by a drunken man.

Marshal White had an earlier argument with the suspect and at about 6:30 pm he came out of his brother's store with a shotgun. He found Marshal White on the southeast corner of the square near the Bank of Bolivar. The shot from the shotgun struck Marshal White in the right eye, tearing away part of his skull, killing him instantly.

On January 14, 1899, the suspect was convicted of 4th degree manslaughter and ordered to pay a 500 dollar fine.

Marshal White was preceeded in death by his wife, Eliza. Interred: Greenwood Cemetery, Bolivar, MO.
