Deputy Marshal William Hennecke was shot and killed escorting a prisoner to jail.

On March 27, 1900, Deputy Hennecke and Officer Jones went to arrest a man in his home, after he had been recognized during a burglary of a Cigar Store and was suspected in several other burglaries. As they were escorting him to jail the prisoner, the prisoner asked to put a deck of cards into his pocket. As Jones took the cards the suspect quickly pulled a hidden revolver and fired a shot that grazed Officer Jones cheek. The suspect then fired on Deputy Hennecke striking him in the right lung. Deputy Hennecke was taken to a nearby store and died within twenty minutes. The suspect, Ellsworth Evans, was convicted of Deputy Hennecke's murder and hanged April 12, 1901.

Deputy Hennecke had been with the department for seven years.
