Marshal Henry Culver was shot and killed by two men who had just stolen a gun from a hardware store.

On November 29, 1879, two men, Jerome Johnson and Aaron Harpster, arrived in Cameron at 10:00 am. Harpster went to the dentist and Johnson went to the saloon. Johnson displayed a pistol in the saloon. When cautioned about brandishing the firearm Johnson stated that he would like to see anyone arrest him. Harpster left the dentist's office at about 5:00 pm and joined Johnson in the saloon. After some time they got their horses and went to the McGregor's Hardware store where they selected a revolver, refused to pay and ran to their horses. Marshal Culver and Constable Ellis followed to arrest them for shooting in the street not knowing that they had just been involved in the theft of the revolver. The two suspects mounted their horses, waited for Marshal Culver and Constable Ellis came within fifty steps of them and attempted to run them down. Marshal Culver stopped Johnson's horse. Johnson shot Marshal Culver in the chest and rode away. Marshal Culver said that the kid from Kidder shot him and that Charlie Redecker would know him. Marshal Culver died about twenty minutes later. Johnson (21) and Harpster (20) were both apprehended the next day three miles west of Kidder.

Marshal Culver was survived by his wife, Carrie.

In 1996 the Cameron Public Safety Building was named in Marshal Culver's honor. Interred: Packard Cemetery, Cameron, MO.
