Marshal George Leonard was shot and killed at 3:20 am at the Cameron Depot while questioning a man about a residential burglary that occurred the previous night. Marshal Leonard was awakened with the report of the burglary, dressed and found a man at the Union Depot. At about 3:20 am he came through the north entrance of the depot with a man in tow. As Marshal Leonard was searching the man two men came in from the south entrance and distracted him. The suspect grabbed for Marshal Leonard's gun out of his overcoat pocket and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, Marshal Leonard sustained three gunshot wounds to the leg and chest. The man then ran out the south door of the depot with Marshal Leonard still hanging on. Seconds later he was found lying flat on his back on the platform. He gasped several times and died.

A suspect, Bob Cushingberry, was convicted for the murder of Marshal Leonard and sentenced to hang for the murder. His sentence was later commuted to life in prison.

Marshal Leonard was first elected in April 1891 and was currently serving his second term.
Interred: Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Maysville, Missouri.
