Juvenile Officer Gordon Galemore was shot and killed by a robbery suspect he was taking to jail. The Fina Station was robbed on West Marshall Street in Charleston at 9:38 pm and an alert was sent out on the suspect. Deputy Galemore was driving two brothers to a residence in the Plainview addition when the 29 year old robbery suspect, who was intoxicated, got into front seat of his car and asked Deputy Galemore to drop him somewhere. Deputy Galemore drove the suspect to a parking lot behind the police station when both the suspect and Deputy Galemore drew their guns. Several shots were fired in the car then Deputy Galemore exited the vehicle and fell to the pavement with a gunshot wound to the chest. The suspect also shot once by Deputy Galemore attempted to flee the scene but was shot by Missouri Trooper Dennis Lewis and was fatally shot a few minutes later by Deputy Sheriff Robert Smith in a parking lot behind Coon's insurance on Main Street.

Deputy Galemore served as a deputy sheriff for 12 years and as a juvenile officer for 7 years. He was survived by his parents, two brothers and three sisters. Interred: IOOF Oddfellows Cemetery, Charleston, MO.
