Officer Daugherty suffered a fatal heart attack while breaking up a fight outside a bar.

On October 27, 1989, at around 7:30 pm, Officer Daugherty responded to a call at Ray's Railroad Lounge. Four men from the same family were involved in the fight. Officer Daugherty put two of the four men involved in the fight into a squad car when he collapsed in the street. Medical personnel responded and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of his death was determined to be a heart attack.

Officer Daugherty had a total of 28 years of law enforcement experience with various agencies. he retired from University City in 1983 after serving there for 26 years. He joined the Piedmont Police Department in 1987. He was a Korean War veteran. He was survived by his wife, son, daughter and granddaughter. Interred: Meador Flatwoods Cemetery, Wayne County, Missouri.
