Officer Steven Jarvis was killed when struck by a vehicle while working traffic control.

On June 14, 1977, Officer Steven Jarvis was working traffic control on northbound I-55 near the St. Louis County Line from about noon that day. One of the vehicles in the accident had been a truck that had spilled it's load onto the roadway. At about 12:30 pm, Officer Jarvis was in his police car waiting for the road to be cleared when his car was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer and pushing it 85 feet and into the bridge and a conduit truck that was involved in the original accident. The patrol car burst into flames and Officer Jarvis, who was trapped in the damaged vehicle, died at the scene.

Officer Jarvis joined the Arnold Police Department in May 1976 after previously serving with the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus police. He was survived by his wife, Diane, and two children. Interred: Sunset Memorial Park and Mausoleum, Affton, MO.
