Federal Prohibition Agent Charles Sterner was shot and killed while serving a search warrant in St. Louis, Missouri.

On June 18, 1922 at 3:30 pm, Agent Sterner and several agents supported by a squad of policemen from the Carondelet Station were executing a search warrant of the Sharpshooters Park and Club at Lemay Ferry and Telegraph Roads when a shot was fired from one of the buildings, striking Agent Sterner, the bullet entering his neck and injuring his spine. He was rushed to Alexian Brothers Hospital where he died seven days later. The raid not only revealed a large amount of liquor on site but an extensive gambling operation.

Sixteen people who were occuppying the grounds were arrested. No suspects were ever identified in his killing.

Agent Sterner, born in Prairie Hill, Missouri, joined the ATF Prohibition Unit on January 30, 1922. He was survived by his wife.
