Night Marshal James Culleton was killed in a fire.

On November, 20, 1907, Night Marshal Culleton was killed in a fire at the city marshal's office in the Snow Building. The fire was discovered shortly past 1:00 am by Justice of the Peace F. E. Lindquist as he investigated the sound of an explosion. When firefighters arrived at the scene, the flames were too hot to attempt an entry. Once the fire was brought under control and extinguished, Marshal Culleton's body was found on the floor. The cause of the fire was theorized to be a kerosene stove that Marshal Culleton may have been using to keep warm as he sought shelter from a storm.

Night Marshal Culleton was survived by his wife and two children.
