Officer John Brummitt was fatally injured in a traffic accident while he was on patrol.

Officer Brummitt died 15 months after being injured in an accident on April 15, 1998. Officer Brummitt was patrolling westbound on Hyatt Street when his patrol car was struck broadside by a pickup truck. Officer Brummitt suffered a broken vertebrae, a broken ankle, various head injuries and was transported to University Hospital in Columbia. Officer Brummitt regained consciousness but was never regained the ability to move or speak. He lapsed into a coma on July 15th and died July 16, 1999.

The DUI supect was sentenced to 18 years for the crash that killed Patrolman Brummit and two citizens. The subject was later released on parole after serving only eight years.

Officer Brummitt served with the Brookfield Police Department for five years. He was survived by his wife. Interred: Rose Hill Cemetery, Brookfield, Missouri.
