Deputy Mayse died as a result of head injuries he received in an on-duty automobile accident resulting from a pursuit four days earlier.

On June 9, 1995, Deputy Mayse's was pursuing a vehicle when his patrol car struck a tree on West 172nd Street, west of Holmes Road. The driver of the vehicle was charged with manslaughter but convicted only of leaving the scene of an accident.

Deputy Mayse had served with the Cass County Sheriff's Office for three years. He was survived by his expectant wife, two daughters, and son. Deputy Mayse was survived by an expectant wife, Scottie Sue, three daughters, and son. He would never meet his third daughter who was born a month after his death. Interred: Garden City Cemetery.
