Marshal Anderson Coffman was shot and killed during a disturbance at a fundraiser. The fundraiser was held at the Hughes House to raise money to aid in the work of protecting the city against the encroachment of the river. Marshal Coffman and Paisley were hired as special police for the event to keep order. Marshal Coffman told two men on the porch to be quiet after one felt the other had insulted his date. The man refused, cursed Marshal Coffman who called Paisley to help with the arrest. Marshal Coffman struck the man on the head with his revolver causing him to bleed. The suspect's brother then came out and grabbed Marshal Coffman's revolver away from him. Marshal Coffman ran across the street to Pullman's store and along with another man held the door shut. The two brothers tried but were unable to enter the store. The suspect's brother then stepped back and fired through the door striking Marshal Coffman near the heart. Marshal Coffman sank to his knees and died moments later.

Marshal Coffman was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Fulton, Callaway County, MO.
