On October 18, 1969, Officer William Byers collapsed while directing traffic at Providence Road and Worley Street following a football game. He died at 5:13 pm at Boone County Hospital.

Officer Byers served in World War II and joined the police department immediately after leaving the service. He was survived by his wife, Mary. Interred: Memorial Park Cemetery.
