Deputy Gary McCormack was killed in an automobile accident while responding to the scene of another accident.
On October 6, 2007 at about 4:00 am, Deputy McCormack was responding to a vehicle accident when his patrol car collided with pickup truck at the intersection of Farm Road 145 and Highway WW. The truck was driven by a volunteer firefighter who was also responding to the same accident. The volunteer firefighter was critically injured in the crash. The Highway Patrol investigation showed that the driver failed to yield at a stop sign, driving into the deputy's path. Deputy McCormack was transported to Springfield St John's Hospital in serious condition where he died from his wounds.
Deputy McCormack had served with
the Greene County Sheriff's Department for only
4 months. He had previously served for 7 years as a police
