Constable Jacob Baughman was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man for a land and water rights dispute.

On July 21, 1871, Constable Baughman, accompanied by two men and complainants, R.M. Jones and his son, Henry, responded to a Strafford, Missouri area cabin near the railroad station of Strawford, about ten miles east of Springfield. Constable Baughman held a peace warrant for Armstrong regarding threats by Armstrong during an argument over land and water rights dispute between Armstrong and Jones. When they arrived at daybreak they found Armstrong, who had been sick for some days, laying on the floor of his home. Constable Baughman announced that Armstrong was to get up and accompany him to Springfield. Armstrong resisted the arrest and a struggle ensued. Henry Jones reportedly drew his revolver to come to the constable's aid and during the struggle a woman living with Armstrong grabbed Jones' the revolver, it discharged and the bullet struck Constable Baughman in the left chest. Armstrong was fatally shot in the stomach and his sister-in-law and Henry Jones were both wounded in the hand. Constable Baughman was taken to the Jones residence where he received medical assistance but died from his injury the next day.
