Deputy Sheriff Henry Dougherty was killed when he was struck by falling debris and buried in the rubble when a tornado struck the Jackson County Courthouse, located at 2nd Street and Main Street, Kansas City, Missouri.

The storm caused wide spread damage in the city, including the tragic death of sixteen children in the three-story Lathrop School building at 9th and Broadway when the bell tower crashed through the roof, passing through all levels of the structure into the basement.

Deputy Dougherty was a veteran of the Company A of the 7th Regiment of the Missouri Militia.
