Detective Melvin Miller was struck and killed by a automobile as he crossed Highway 470. Detective Miller was westbound on Woods Chapel Road at the intersection of 470 when he attempted to cross Highway 470 he was struck by a northbound semi-tractor truck and forced over into the southbound lane striking yet another vehicle. Witnesses reported that the truck ran the red light.

Detective Miller served with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department for 11 years, served on the Metro Squad. He was survived by his two children, Christopher and Jessica.
