Deputy Juvenile Officer Charles West was shot and killed while transporting a juvenile for medical treatment.
The juvenile had been arrested for shooting four other juveniles, auto theft and possession of stolen property. During the shooting incident the juvenile was attacked by a crowd and sustained a broken jaw. Officer West picked up the suspect at the Juvenile Detention Center and took him to Children's Mercy Hospital for adjustment of wires in his jaw. On January 10, 1989, Officer West agreed to take the juvenile to a the juvenile's residence in the 2700 block of Holmes Avenue where the juvenile entered the home. The juvenile returned and shot Officer West in the back of the head with a handgun he obtained inside the home. The car was found abandoned with Officer West's body still in the trunk a few hours later in the 5900 block of Montgall Avenue.
Officer West was originally hired as a youth worker in 1981 and promoted to juvenile officer in 1984. Interred: Forest Hill Cemetery.
