Deputy William Givens was killed when his patrol car was struck by a drunk driver.
Deputy Givens was driving on Highway 59 heading south near the north limits of Lanagan when he was met nearly head on by an intoxicated driver. The other vehicle rounded a curve at a high rate of speed, crossed the center line, back to the right shoulder and then crossed the center line again into the southbound lane striking Deputy Given's car nearly head on. Deputy Givens was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 26-year-old driver who struck Deputy Givens was charged with manslaughter, vehicular injury, and driving while intoxicated.
Deputy Givens had served with the agency for 6 years. He was survived by his wife, Ollie. Interred: Butler Creek Cemetery, Sulphur Springs, Arkansas.
