Deputy Sheriff George Elliott was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a murder suspect.
On June 12th at 2:00 pm, Deputy George Elliott and Deputy Elkins went to a house to arrest a man for the murder of his brother-in-law. Deputy Elkins went to the back door while Deputy Elliott went to the front door of the house. Deputy Elliott knocked at the door and announced he had a warrant for the suspect's arrest. The suspect shot twice through the door with a double barreled shotgun striking Deputy Elliott in the arm and the chest. Deputy Elliott entered the house but feeling faint returned to the buggy and was rushed to a doctor by Deputy Elkins. Deputy Elliott died at 1:00 am on June 15th. A posse located the suspect at a neighbor's residence on June 15th. He surrendered when the posse attempted to start the house on fire.
The suspect was convicted of murder and hanged July 10, 1898.
George Elliott was a local prosecuting attorney who had been deputized to arrest the suspect.
