Marshal Melvin Stiles was shot and killed after responding to a disturbance call.
On July 26, 1974, Marshal Stiles and Jasper County Deputy Bob West answered a disturbance call at 9:05 pm at 401 N Grant, in Oronogo. Shots were exchanged while they attempted to arrest a man and his two brothers at the home. The suspect shot Marshal Stiles with a shotgun, striking him in the head and killing him instantly. The suspect, Dale Wild, 29, sustained gunshot wounds from Marshal Stiles and Deputy West. Suspect Wild died from his wounds at a hospital in Web City. The remaining two brothers were taken into custody.
Marshal Stiles had been city marshal for only six weeks.
Marshal Stiles had served with the Oronogo Police Department for just 6 weeks. He was survived by his wife and three children. Interred: Park Cemetery, Carthage, MO.
