Constable Mack Stubblefield was shot and killed while conducting a raid on a gambling den.

On November 12, 1922, Constable Stubblefield and two other officers entered the 12th Street Joint at about 7:30 pm. They traversed a stairway into the basement area where the gambling den was located. All the dice players quickly surrendered but the owner noticed Stubblefield with whom he had a grudge. The owner, Ben Wade, shot Constable Stubblefield three times, once in the right eye and twice in the left breast near the heart killing him instantly. The other two officers fired on the Wade striking him three times but he survived for trial. It was reported that Wade had said that he would go peacefully if other officers raided his establishment but that he would kill Stubblefield if he was to attempt to arrest him. In November 1923, the suspect was sentenced to 15 years for the murder of Constable Stubblefield..

Constable Stubblefield, 68, had previously served as Caruthersville City Marshal for six years followed by a four-year term as Pemiscot County Sheriff. He later served as special agent for the Frisco Railway. He had only five hours left on his six-month appointment as constable for the Little Prairie Township. He was survived by his wife, Stella, and son, Damon. Interred: Little Prairie Cemetery, Caruthersville, MO.
