Marshal Fred Rogers was shot and killed while serving an arrest warrant.

On October 21, 1918 at approximately 7:00 pm, Marshal Rogers, responded to a complaint of the suspect brandishing a weapon went in search of the suspect with arrest warrant for carrying a concealed weapon. Marshal Rogers located the suspect, Zach T. Hopkins (50), near the LaFont schoolhouse south of the Frisco Railroad. When Marshal Rogers approached and ordered the suspect to halt, the suspect shot the marshal at point blank range with a .38 caliber pistol striking him below the right eye causing immediate death. The suspect surrendered himself to be held until the county authorities could respond. Following an inquest the suspect was held in the county jail for trial.

Marshal Rogers had recently been appointed marshal to fill the vacancy when the previous marshal resigned. He was survived by his wife and seven children. Interred: Portageville City Cemetery.
