Deputy Ferman Raines was killed in an automobile accident while enroute to an alarm call.
On May 29, 1988 at approximately 10:32 am, Deputy Raines was responding to an alarm at Houston Brothers Service Repair Center in Buckhorn when his patrol car veered off of Business Route I-44 in west Waynesville. His vehicle became airborne, struck a utility pole, overturned and landed just outside the Waynesville Bus Station. Deputy Raines was thrown from the vehicle and died from his injuries.
Deputy Raines previously served as chief of police the Waynesville Police Department joining the police department in 1969. Deputy Raines also served 26 years in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of WW II, retiring at the rank of sergeant. He was survived by his son, Michael. Interred: Waynesville Memorial Park.
