Deputy Carr was killed attempting to arrest two men for robbery.
Circumstances surrounding a series of robberies near Sandy Woods in Scott County directed suspicion on two men recently arrived in the area. On January 15, 1875, Deputy Carr with a warrant and a posse of five men went to arrest the men. When the posse arrived they saw the two men in the field. A woman screamed a warning to the suspects who began to flee. As the posse gained on the men one of the suspects turned and shot Deputy Carr with a shotgun. Deputy Carr died within a few minutes. The following day Sheriff Swank of Mississippi County led a posse that captured the men but a member of posse was also killed in the effort.
