Sheriff Wingo was shot and killed on his way to a land-sale.

The piece of property had been reposessed by the sheriff and was being sold by the county. Sheriff Wingo was ambushed as he neared the property, shot with a rifle on the road and discovered by persons nearby who heard the shot. He died within a fifteen minutes without being able to speak. The former the former land owner was determined to have shot the sheriff through the body in an ambush from alongside the roadway.
