Officer Jesse Embrey was killed in an automobile accident while en route to the police department headquarters after being called in while off duty to assist in paperwork on a fatal vehicular he had worked on. His vehicle was traveling southbound on Phelps County Route U seven miles northeast of St James when it left the roadway and struck a tree.

Officer Embrey had served with the St. James Police Department for 6 months. Officer Embrey was a US Army veteran having served as a sergeant in the Persion Gulf. He is survived by his wife and two children. Interred: Saint James Cemetery. Saint James, Phelps County, MO.
