In the early Saturday morning hours at about 12:45 am, Officer Lee Boone was on patrol on horseback when he saw a prowler. Officer Boone called to the man to come forward. The prowler fired one shot at Officer Boone striking him in the wrist. Officer Boone fired back at the suspect four times and rode after him but the suspect managed to escape.

Officer Boone sought medical attention and it was thought the wound was minor but infection set in. On May 16, 1893, Officer Boone died from blood poisoning at his home.

Officer Boone, 50, had served with the police department for 13 years. He was survived by his wife, Sarah. Interred: Faith Des Peres Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Frontenac, MO.
