The officers were in plainclothes driving on Minerva Street when they spotted the suspect and pulled up next to him. Officer Carroll grabbed reached out the car window and grabbed the suspect by his jacket. The suspect gave his name, Ray Bingham, and then fled, with both officers in pursuit. As the suspect suddenly reappeared in a yard of a residence at 1360 Bell, Detective Riek fired two shots. The second shot struck Officer Carroll in the back of the head as he emerged from behind a high board fence in between the other detective and the suspect. Detective Riek was overcome with grief. Bingham was apprehended by other officers an hour later, denied any knowledge of the burglaries and said he ran from the officers because he was afraid.
