Officer John Walsh of the Soulard District was sustained severe injuries at 3:05 am on New Year's Day after being struck by a car driven by a man who had been drinking at Broadway and Lafayette Streets. Probationary officer George Priester had crossed the street directly in front of Officer Walsh. The driver of the vehicle, Thomas Hastey, who stated that he saw Officer Priester but not Officer Walsh due to the darkness and falling snow was not considered drunk and was not charged. Officer Walsh sustained a fractured ribs and skull. He died of his injuries 8 days later at City Hospital.
Officer Walsh had been with the agency for 26 years, joining in 1903. He was survived by his wife and daughter. Interred: Calvary Cemetery.
