Officer Joseph Meier was struck and killed by a vehicle while standing on the sidewalk along Ninth Street about twenty feet north of chambers. A car driven by Joseph Schewe entered the area and struck a car parked belonging to Edward Woodson next to where Officer Meier was standing. That car was then pushed into Officer Meier, who was knocked to the asphalt paved street, inflicting severe injuries. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Schewe was arrested and charged with manslaughter, felonious wounding, and careless driving.
Officer Meier had been with the agency for 14 years, joining the department in 1915. He was survived by his wife. Interred: Calvary Cemetery.
