On May 30, 1934, Officer James Carmody was struck by an eastbound Forest Park streetcar at Oakland and Kingshighway after taking a three year-old girl who had fallen out of a family automobile at Manchester and Kingshighway to Missouri Pacific Hospital.
Witnesses said that Officer Carmody stepped in front of a street car operated by F.H. Needham. It is not known if Officer Carmody did not see the street car or thought that it was slowing for a passenger. Officer Carmody was taken to Deaconess Hospital where he was determined to have a compound fracture of the left leg, edema of the brain, and internal involving his left lung and left kidney. He was pronounced dead on May 31st at 1:35 pm.
Officer Carmody, born in Ireland, served on the police department for 27 years. He was survived by his wife, Margaret. Interred: Calvary Cemetery.
