Sheriff Newt Dangerfield Boles was shot and killed when he attempted to arrest a bank robbery suspect.
On August 12, 1924, Sheriff Boles found a trailed a suspect for a bank robbery in Protem to a farm near Gobbler's Knob, a few miles southeast of the town of Hollister in Taney County. Once the suspect was in custody, Sheriff Boles sent the deputy accompanying him to bring a car for transportation. While the deputy was away, the suspect broke away from Sheriff Boles and fired on him with a revolver. The bullet striking Sheriff Boles in the head, passing through his brain. Upon the deputy's return he discovered Sheriff Boles' body and the suspect had fled the scene. The suspect, Bob Ramsey, surrendered to authorities near Branson two days later. The woman who owned the farm was also arrested when it was discovered that she slipped a pistol used to the suspect that he then used to kill Sheriff Boles.
On December 5th, 1924, the suspect was convicted of Sheriff Boles' murder and sentenced to life in prison and twenty-five years for the robbery. The woman was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 12 years.
Sheriff Boles was survived by his wife, five boys, a daughter, and two step-daughters. Interred: Garrison Cemetery, Garrison, Missouri.
