Marshall Augustus Pease was shot while serving a warrant at a residence.

At approxiamately 3 am on April 13, 1931, Marshal Pease accompanied by Sheriff George Bailey, Deputy Sheriff Albert Phillips and Prosecuting Attorney Gordon Dorris responded to arrest Fielding Vogan at his residence on a warrant for the of sale of whiskey. Marshal Pease knocked on a door and received no response but after hearing noise from the rear of the residence he observed Vogan pouring out liquor. They forced the back door open and Gordan shot 6 times, striking Marshal Pease twice, once in the lower right abdomen and in the wrist. Marshal Pease was taken to Christa Hogan Hospital in West Plains where he died from his wounds at 10:45 am the following morning. The suspect was held in jail in Poplar Bluff for his own safety and the venue for the trial was changed to Carter County. After a two-day trial he was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Marshal Pease had been re-elected as city marshall three times and had begun his fourth term. Prior to being elected marshal he had been employed at the roundhouse for the railroad. He was survived by his wife, Shade Bernice Henry Pease, and his 17 year-old daughter, Mina, step-daughter, Leona, and step-son, James. Interred: Koshkonong Cemetery, Koshkonong, MO.
