On July 25, 2021 , Special Agent James D. Holdman died as a result of an accidental discharge while serving at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Field Office in Springfield, Missouri.

Special Agent Holdman was on duty, in travel status, preparing to fly to Washington DC. Special Agent Holdman inadvertently shot himself in the chest as he removed his service issue rifle from the trunk of his department vehicle.

Special Agent Holdman had served with the United States Department of Homeland Security - Immigration and Customs Enforcement - Office of Investigations, US, for 18 years and in law enforcement for 32 years. He previously served as a Washington County Deputy Sheriff, a State Fire Marshall investigator before joining the Department of Homeland Security in 2016. He is survived by his wife, son, father, and sister. His son also serves as a law enforcement officer.
